Wiping Over Fabric Socks
Question:
Is it permissible to wipe over the fabric socks or is it limited to the leather socks (khuffain)?
Answer:
Wiping over socks is recommended in the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace be upon him). It is better for one who wears them to wipe over them, rather than taking them off to wash his feet. Al-Mughirah ibn Shu`bah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “Once I was in the company of the Prophet (peace be upon him), he then performed ablution and I dashed to take off his socks. He said, “Leave them for I had put them on after performing ablution”. So he wiped over them. (Agreed Upon)
Once Sheikh Al-Islam (Ibn Taymiyah) was asked: Is it permissible to wipe over socks, like the khuff, or not?
He said: “Yes, it is permissible to wipe over the socks if one can walk in them, whether they are made of leather or not.” (Majmu` Al-Fatawa)
Dr. Muhammad Salah narrates some hadiths about the legality of wiping over the socks. For example, Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) sent out a military expedition and commanded them to wipe over the turbans and leather socks. (Ahmad and Abu Dawud)
