What is Athan? What does it mean? Why do Muslims care about the call to prayer? Why those words in particular? Why did Prophet Muhammad command Muslims to repeat the words of the call to prayer when they hear them?
Why are non-Muslims touched by the words of the adhan?
Virtues of the Adhan
Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) promised a great reward fir the muezzin in the Hereafter. He said:
“The muezzins (callers to prayer) will have the longest necks on the Day of Resurrection.” (Muslim)
There is a great reward also in repeating the words of the adhan. Alqamah ibn Waqqas said:
“I was with Muawiyah when the muezzin called the Adhan. Muawiyah said what the muezzin said, but when he said: ‘Hayya ‘alas-salah (come to prayer),’ he said: ‘La hawla wa la quwwata illa Billah (There is no power and no strength except with Allah);’ and when he said: ‘Hayya ‘alal-falah (come to prosperity),’ he said: ‘La hawla wa la quwwata illa Billah (There is no power and no strength except with Allah).’ After that he said what the muezzin said, then he said: ‘I heard the Messenger of Allah saying exactly like that.’” (An-Nasa`i)
Abdullah ibn Amr narrated that Prophet Muhammad said: “If you hear the muezzin, then say as he says. Then send prayer upon me, because whoever sends prayer upon me, Allah will send prayer upon him ten times due to it. Then ask Allah that He gives me Al-Wasilah, because it is a place in Paradise which is not for anyone except for a slave from the slaves of Allah, and I hope that I am him. And whoever asks that I have Al-Wasilah, then (my) intercession will be made lawful for him.” (At-Tirmidhi)
