Forgetting Sujud As-Sahw after the Obligatory Prayer
Question:
What shall I do if I forget to make sujud As-Sahw (prostration of forgetfulness) after finishing the prescribed Prayer? I remembered after offering the sunnah prayer, what shall I do now?
Answer:
In the name of Allah, we praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright.
Sujud As-Sahw consists of two prostrations. It is performed like the prostrations in the prayer, including the prostration’s integrals, such as: placing the limb’s of prostration on the ground, remaining motionless for a moment, etc. Abdur-Rahman ibn `Awf narrated that he heard the Prophet ( peace be upon him) saying: “When one of you becomes forgetful in his prayer so that he does not know if he prayed one or two, then let him consider it one. When he does not know if he prayed three or four, then let him consider it three, and let him perform two prostrations before he says the tasleem.” (At-Tirmidhi)
Three cases in which prostration of forgetfulness must be performed:
– Performing something additional in prayer (addition) inattentively.
– Missing an obligatory act of prayer
– When one is uncertain whether he has performed something additional or missed some integral part of prayer (doubt).
