Water Used for Purification
Question:
What is the ruling if a rat falls into a well? Is this water pure or not? Can I use it for performing wudu’ (ablution)? What are the characteristics of the pure water?
Answer:
In the name of Allah, we praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright.
It should be noted that if one of the three water’s characteristics, i.e. taste, color or smell changes: in this case this water is impure, it is not acceptable to perform ablution with it and it does not remove an impurity according to the Jurists.
The water of a well which springs forth from the earth does not become najis (impurity) owing to something najis falling in it, unless its color, smell, or taste changes. However, it is recommended that, in the event of certain impurities falling in it, a quantity of water should be drawn from the well.
