Supplication of Qunut in Prayer

Question:

Is it permissible to raise hands together when making du`aa’ (supplication) during the congregational and individual prayer?

Answer:

Qunut is the supplication made after the standing up position during the last rak`ah (unit of prayer) of the Prayer. Scholars have differed about the time of making qunut whether it is before or after ruku` (bowing). Most scholars of hadith such as Imam Ahmad and others see that it is allowed in both cases. But they said that it is preferred after the bowing because it is mentioned more often.

Regarding raising hands during supplication

The majority of scholars have agreed that it is not only permissible, but also recommended to raise hands while offering qunut. There is a general hadith narrated by Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Your Lord, may He be blessed and exalted, is Kind and Most Generous, and He is too kind to let His slave, if he raises his hands (palms facing the sky) to Him, bring them back empty.” (Abu Dawud)

Responding to the above mentioned question, Dr. Muhammad Salah said that raising hands in prayer is only in one case, that it is the supplication of qunut. It is allowed before and after bowing. It is also highly recommended to raise hands in qunut when offering prayer individually.
