Observing khushu` (humility) during prayer.

Question:

I always forget how many rak`ahs (unit of prayer) I offered during my prayer. It happens nearly all the time and it is frustrating. It is due to lack of humility so how could I observe khush` (humility) while offering prayer?

Answer:

Almighty Allah says,

Certainly will the believers have succeeded. They who are during their prayer humbly submissive. (Al-Mu’minun 23: 1-2)

Kushu` (humility) is the submissiveness found in the heart due to the consciousness of Allah’s greatness and mighty. It is the key of acceptance for one’s prayer. The believer should offer prayer between fear and hope as it is the last prayer in this world. Abu Ayyub narrated said that “A man came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, teach me but make it concise.’ He said: ‘When you stand to pray, pray like a man bidding farewell.” (Ibn Majah)

Responding to this question, Dr. Muhammad Salah states that keep forgetting how many rak`ahs or which surahs were recited is due to the lack of humility in prayer. He says that is hard for anyone to have full concentration from the begging of prayer to the end. But a believer should do his best to maintain humility. The worshiper will be rewarded for the part in which he maintains humility while the other part will be eliminated. ‘Ammar ibn Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “I heard the Prophet (peace be upon him) as saying: A man returns after saying his prayer while a tenth part of his prayer, or a ninth part, or an eight part, or a seventh part, or a sixth part, or a fifth part, or a third part, or half of it, is recorded for him.” (Abu Dawud).
