Women Call Out Loud Adhan and Iqamah
Question:
Why cannot women call out loud the adhan (call to prayer) and iqamah?
Answer:
In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright.
The Kuwaiti Fiqh Encyclopedia reads: “The jurists agreed that it is impermissible for a woman to call the Athan (the announcement made to indicate the beginning of the due time of the Prayer) and Iqamah for a congregation of men because the Athan is, in principle, prescribed to inform people of the time of the prayer, and she is not permitted to do that. Also, it is prescribed to raise one’s voice with the Athan, while she is not permitted to raise her voice. A person who is not permitted to call the Athan is not permitted to call the Iqamah either.”
